It's that time of the year again! Nope, not Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/Festivus, or even HollyDay.. It's time to start planning for the 1000 Smiles Project 2009. I would like to encourage anyone who may be able to volunteer for a week on the trip to check out the
http://www.gsjamaica.org/ website.
We need volunteers of every sort; Drs. Dentists, Hygenists, Assistants, Teachers, Lovers of Travel, and Fans of Humanity! The major component is the 1000 Smiles project, but there are also literacy programs, educational programs and other humanitarian efforts.
Sandals/ Beaches Resorts Intl. teams up with GreatShape/ 1000 Smiles foundation to donate all-inclusive accomatations throught the trip.
The project warmed by heart, and gave me a personal satisfaction that I had never before experienced!
Statistics from the 2008 trip:
115+ volunteers came from 4 countries, including 2 first ever volunteers from Europe
10,568 Jamaicans served in clinical care and education
2,333 Jamaicans received clinical care such as fillings, cleanings, sealants and extractionsincluding 631 Sandals and Beaches staff
4,607 separate procedures were completed on these patients
1041 cleanings; 1503 fillings; 1084 extractions; 895 sealants
A total of 3,580 teeth were sealed against cavities
8,235 Jamaican children received preventative oral hygiene education in 31 schools!
However, if you are unable to join me for a week or two on the project, the other way to help is, yep, ya guessed it, help with funding! Everything from $5 to $500 helps me cover my project fees, and helps to purchase equiptment, medicine, educational materials, and many other things for those who are much in need.
